Tono Nambu Yabusame Preservation Society (Tono City, Iwate Prefecture)
Tono Nambu Yabusame (horseback archery) is said to have originated in 1334 when Moroyuki, the fourth generation of Nambu, dedicated it to Kushihiki Hachimangu Shrine in Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture. In 1627, he was transferred from Hachinohe to Tono, and in 1661, he built a stable at Tonogo Hachimangu Shrine and dedicated a yabusame performance. Even after the transfer, he was ordered by the head family to make dedication performances to Kushihiki Hachimangu Shrine, traveling from Tono to Hachinohe every year to perform yabusame. The ceremony was revived in 1953 after it was discontinued during the Meiji period, and has been performed every year since. One of the characteristics is that the attendant follows the archers while praising “You itariya”, which were compliments for the archers. This is something that can only be seen in a Nambu Yabusame.
